BRANDING CRIME #04

The Vague Messaging Trap

“Empowering consumers with bio-organic, hand-selected, nature-sourced nutritional units.”

How it kills

  • Fills your brand with grand, important-sounding words that ultimately say nothing.
  • Leaves potential customers confused, forcing them to piece together what you actually offer like a cryptic crossword puzzle.
  • Turns your tagline into something that could just as easily belong to a tech startup, a consulting firm, or an avant-garde yogurt brand.

What Works

  • You are the expert on what you do, and sometimes that makes it feel *too* simple—like you need to dress it up. The temptation of jargon is strong, but counterproductive. Your work is valuable even without the ten-dollar words.
  • Say what you do in plain language—clarity is more impressive than corporate poetry.
  • If your tagline sounds like it was generated by a motivational poster factory, scrap it before it starts giving TED Talks.
