BRANDING CRIME #19

The Overpromise & Underdeliver

“Revolutionary! Life-changing! Completely different from anything you’ve ever seen before!”

How it kills

  • Builds sky-high expectations that reality can’t keep up with—leading to disappointment, frustration, and refunds.
  • Turns first-time buyers into never-again buyers when they realize the “groundbreaking innovation” is just the same product repackaged with another name.
  • Creates a trust problem—once customers feel misled, they won’t believe you next time (even when you’re telling the truth).
  • A sensationalist campaign on a not sensational product doesn’t make it succeed—it just makes it fail faster.

What Works

  • Promise what you can actually deliver—surprise customers by exceeding expectations, not falling short of them.
  • Focus on real benefits, not just marketing buzzwords (“Game-changer” doesn’t mean much if the game hasn’t changed).
  • If you really want to use the expression “Life-changing”, make sure it’s coming from a genuine review—not your marketing team’s thesaurus.
